The sisters, Mulowayi and Mapenzi are Las Nietas de Nonó. They were raised between the Manuel A. Pérez housing project in Río Piedras and the San Antón neighborhood in Carolina. Their artistic practices are framed within the socioeconomic and geographical context of the exclusion and displacement of black communities in Puerto Rico, racial and class discrimination, mass incarceration, drug trafficking, obstetric violence and poverty. In their creative process they evoke the family memory to expose the systematic oppressions that they have lived through for generations. Their practices also highlight circumstances and elements that are present in their neighborhood: the expansion of ancestral knowledge, the exchange of food grown in the neighborhood and the reuse of found materials.

The work of Las Nietas de Nonó is fueled by the intersection of theater, performance, dance, activism, ecology, emancipatory education and local food. In the old plot of their paternal grandparents, Don Nonó (farmer) and Doña Manuela (curandera or healer), located in the San Antón neighborhood in Carolina, they manage Patio Taller, an art workshop and knowledge exchange to honor the practices that have come to life on the plot since the late 40’s: the exchange of fruit crops, healing by medicinal plants and the raising of farm animals.

Las Nietas de Nonó have received the United States Artist Award (2018), The Art of Change from the Ford Foundation (2017), and the Global Arts Fund of the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice (2017). Their work has been shown in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba, the United States, Scotland, Germany and England. 

Las hermanas, Mulowayi y Mapenzi son Las Nietas de Nonó. Se criaron entre el Residencial Manuel A. Pérez de Río Piedras y el Barrio San Antón de Carolina. Sus prácticas artísticas se enmarcan dentro del contexto socioeconómico y geográfico de la exclusión y el desplazamiento de comunidades negras en Puerto Rico, la discriminación racial y de clase, encarcelamiento masivo, tráfico de drogas, violencia obstétrica y la pobreza. En su proceso creativo evocan la memoria familiar para visibilizar las opresiones sistemáticas que han vivido desde generaciones. Sus prácticas también destacan circunstancias y elementos que están presentes en su vecindario: la expansión del conocimiento ancestral, el intercambio de alimentos cultivados en el barrio y la reutilización de materiales encontrados. 

Las Nietas de Nonó crean desde la intersección del teatro, performance, danza, activismo, ecología, educación emancipatoria y la comida local. En la antigua parcela de sus abuelxs paternxs, Don Nonó (Agricultor) y Doña Manuela (Curandera) ubicada en el Barrio San Antón de Carolina gestionan Patio Taller. Desde allí honran las prácticas que han cobrado vida en la parcela desde finales de los años 40:  el intercambio de cosechas frutales, la curación por medio de plantas medicinales y la crianza de animales de granja, se gestiona también un espacio de taller de arte e intercambio de conocimiento. 

Las Nietas de Nonó recibieron el United State Artist Award (2018), The Art of Change from Ford Foundation (2017),  y el Global Arts Fund de Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice (2017). Su arte ha sido presentado en Puerto Rico, República Dominicana, Haití, Cuba, los Estados Unidos, Escocia, Alemania e Inglaterra.
